i could do with some advice.. my uncle is a born-again and attends a church in liverpool and has asked me to give an hours talk on 'how to answer jehovah's witnesses' basically to help his churches members talk to witnesses on the when they come to their doors.. i have most of the info off freeminds and jw files, and was wondering what you all thought would be the best subjects to approach, the easiest to explain and the most effective for making jw's think after being questioned on it.. appreciate your comments..
Search, I haven't heard of him, but my Dad thinks he has. I'm a little familiar with the Liverpool Christian Fellowship, anyway. Its a good idea of your Uncle's!
I think that personal testimony should come high up the list, along with the lack of forgiveness shown by da-ing, the false prophecies, and the fact that they don't take communion when it clearly says that we should in the Bible.
Not sure about them, but they seem to be what everyone else on this topic is bringing up. I think that the child abuse and the UN scandal will only cause arguments, which aren't constructive. It would depend on how an individual approached it.

Which church is this, Search? I go to a church in Liverpool too, and I'm curious as to which one it is. I think that most churches should have something like this, because a lot of the people my family know are unsure as to what to say when the JWs call.
I agree with the people who say that you should give them your own personal story and experience. And above all - show them kindness, consideration, and love. This is far more likely to get through their barriers than being argumentative and angry.

That was a great essay. I went out with a Witness for 2 years, and I'm amazed that it lasted that long. We were actucally allowed to be alone together, looking back on this it seems pretty lax on their part. I must have come across as a fine and dependable young woman!!!...

Sorry Gordy, I don't know the answer to your questions, but I live in Manchester and I was wondering if this convention is being held in Northenden? Is it a convention for only Manchester JWs, or is it for JWs from other areas near by as well?

i had given her a heart-shaped necklace and i told her "that this symbolizes me giving my heart to you".
we have been through good times and bad , maybe its just me, i go all out when i'm passionate about something.
I know exactly what you are going through. I was going out with a JW guy for 2 years, and he dumped me because his family and the elders at his KH told him to. You have to understand the hold that these people have over individuals such as this girl. They aren't afraid to pile on the emotional blackmail, and make them chose between you and their God and family. I know that this isn't going to make you feel any better, but you have to try to get on with life. Go out with your friends, spend time with your family. When I was depressed over my break up, they were the only thing that helped me through it. It sounds to me like you did everything right with this girl, and treated her with total respect. You can hold your head up high, and know that you acted honourably. The best thing you can do is be there if she needs you. She will have been through a lot that you don't realise, and I wouldn't mind betting that she is hurting just as much as you.
I hope that you can move on, it is the best thing you can do. I did, and I am much happier now.

the question is: when a jw comes to my door what reaction of mine would have the best chance of motivating that person to ponder or question their beliefs?
what will help them open, rather than shut down and fortify their shell of exclusivity?
I agree with you Devon. I think they are so used to being shouted at, that they are fully prepared for it with answers to just about everything. Kindness they are not prepared for!

I think that you have the right idea about what to do when JWs call. I have had a couple of experiences where arguing does no good, and I often found myself thinking "I can't win, regardless of what I do or say!" One time this elder called on his own, and I had to struggle to keep my temper. He had this smarmy smile on his face, which he maintained through out his tirade against Catholics. I don't think I have ever felt more insulted in my whole life. In the end I had to make my excuses, otherwise I would have said something I regretted!
However, I learnt from these experiences, and now I do my best to be kind, as you say-its the only way to get anywhere with them! I do genuinely like some that call-you can see that they mean so well, its just a shame they are so totally brainwashed.
